What is an AI CFO — in plain English.
An AI CFO is software that reads a business's financial data and answers the forward-looking questions a chief financial officer would ask: whether a hire is affordable, when cash will tighten, which costs are leaking, what a price change is worth. Bookkeeping software records what happened. An AI CFO works on what happens next — and shows the reasoning, so the owner can challenge it.

What does an AI CFO actually do?
It reads the numbers a business already keeps — revenue, costs, cash, invoices, headcount — and turns them into answers about what comes next: a direction, a number, and the factors behind it, rather than another dashboard to interpret.
The five questions it is built around are the ones owners ask at the end of a bad month:
- Can I afford this hire? The month the decision becomes safe, and the dip it creates before it pays for itself.
- When does cash tighten? The weeks ahead, the size of the dip, and the move that clears it.
- What should I charge? The price your market will bear, product by product, and what a change does to profit.
- Where is money leaking? Duplicated spend, dead subscriptions and quiet price creep, ranked by effort.
- Will a lender fund me? An honest read through the lenses underwriters use, and the work that improves it.
None of those answers needs a finance department. All of them need the numbers read forward instead of backwards.
How is an AI CFO different from bookkeeping or reporting software?
The distinction is direction. Everything an owner has been sold until now describes the past; an AI CFO works on the future. That is the half of the picture SMEs have been running without.
Records, nothing else
They keep the ledger straight and the filings on time. Essential plumbing, and entirely rear-view: interpreting what they record is left to you.
The same history, better charts
They restate what already happened in cleaner shapes, built for finance teams most owner-managed businesses have never had.
The forward question
The same numbers, pointed at what happens next, with the reasoning shown. Still rare in tools built for owner-managed businesses.
What should an AI CFO cost?
Foresight has always had a price, and until now it was a payroll line. A part-time or fractional CFO costs around £3,000 a month — and that is the cheapest version of the service, bought a few days at a time.
Software changes that arithmetic. The category is priced per month rather than per engagement, for an owner rather than a boardroom, and it should be a fraction of the cheapest human version of the same thinking.
Does an SME actually need one?
Three hundred million SMEs worldwide run with no finance team at all, deciding by gut feel. Around 82% of business failures involve cash flow problems the owner saw too late. Fewer than half of SME credit applications now succeed — and analysis of 24,000 declined businesses found that roughly 65% had fixable issues rather than unviable ones.
The pattern in those numbers is not bad businesses. It is businesses making decisions without the forward view: no cash projection, no scenario, no number attached to the choice in front of them.
Where Oak fits
Oak is an AI CFO being built in London by Oakmont Kingsley Ltd, for owner-managed businesses and the advisers who serve them. We are not showing the whole picture yet — the detail arrives at launch, and it is worth waiting for.
If the questions above are the ones you are asking, leave your email below and you will see it first.
Common questions, answered plainly.
No. Accounting software is the record — transactions, ledgers, filings, compliance. An AI CFO works above that record and answers forward questions about the business: what a hire does to cash, what a price change is worth, how the next two quarters look under three scenarios. You keep your accounting software.
No. This category works from the numbers a business already knows — revenue, expenses, cash, invoices, headcount. It should state its assumptions and tell you where the data is thin, rather than dressing a guess up as certainty.
No. It is decision support, not regulated financial or tax advice, and it files nothing. It makes you sharper in the room with your accountant, because you arrive already knowing what the numbers are doing and what you intend to do about them.
Not the whole thing. Oak is pre-launch, and we are keeping the detail until it opens. Join the list and you will get the first look, plus early access when we go live.
